Security: Automated Cybersecurity Tools Still Require Strong Planning and Supervision
While cyber-hacks and break-ins dominating the news on a regular basis, many businesses are no doubt interested in the promise of automated cybersecurity, AI software that can automatically spot and stop hackers from causing damage. At an estimated cost of $3.86 million for an average data breach, it is no wonder that companies can see the allure in the promise, and the strong promotional hype can make automated cybersecurity products tempting.
But while automated cybersecurity undoubtedly provides benefit and the capability may exceed previous generations of security software, it’s simply not possible to turn it on and forget it without putting your company at risk.
Part of the problem is that automated cybersecurity products aren’t mature products yet. They’re new and they have great potential, but likely hackers will learn to exploit them as part of the standard cat and mouse game of security. In addition, IT departments often don’t have a complete understanding of how they work and what their strengths and possible weaknesses are.
Some of the automated cybersecurity options that exist are categorized as Security Orchestration Automation and Response (SOAR), Extended Detection and Response (XDR), and User and Entity Behavior Analytics (UEBA). SOAR is expected to grow to a $1.3 billion market by 2026, based on a report by 360 Research.
Damian Ehrlicher, CEO of ProtectedIT, wrote for Forbes that “SOAR tools are not the perfect band-aid people make it out to be, but an effective tool in your cybersecurity arsenal. It’s a complicated tool that relies on proper controls, clean signals that capture incidents correctly, that can normalize and enrich data from internal and external sources that have a clear operational process for escalation and authorization which help to trigger an automated or manual response.”
