Security: Celebrating 9 Years of World Password Day
The first Thursday in May is World Password Day. In 2022 it falls on May 5th and this is the 9th year of existence since first being celebrated in 2013. The idea for setting aside a day focused on thinking about passwords was an idea conceived by Intel.
For decades passwords have been a central strategy for securing digital data and it’s likely that passwords won’t go away anythime soon. But passwords are evolving. They are becoming frequently supplemented by two-factor authentication or single-use codes.
Surya Varanasi, CTO of StorCentric, said that “few would argue the fact that a strong password is an ideal first line of data protection defense. Without this basic security measure, you are leaving the door wide open to a multitude of cybercrime risks. Unfortunately however, while highly sophisticated password support tools are available, today’s cyber criminals also have extremely advanced password hacking technology at their fingertips. Which means, an increased risk of your passwords being leapfrogged, and your data being compromised.”
Security vendors are working hard to harden security. Varanasi of StorCentric gives an example of their product : Unbreakable Backup. But StorCentric/Nexsan isn’t alone. Varanasi said that “The ideal cybercrime defense is a layered defense that starts with a powerful password, and continues with Unbreakable Backup. As backup has become today’s cyber criminals’ first target via ransomware and other malware, an Unbreakable Backup solution can provide you with two of the most difficult hurdles for cyber criminals to overcome – immutable snapshots and object locking. Immutable snapshots are by default, write-once read-many (WORM) but now some vendors have added features like encryption where the encryption keys are located in an entirely different location than the data backup copy(ies).”
