Security: The Central Barrier that’s Blocking SMB Technology Adoption
How are businesses using technology and what challenges do businesses have that prevent them from adopting new technology?
That’s the question asked recently by Dell in their first Global Technology Adoption Index (GTAI), a survey of how technology is being used at more than 2000 global enterprises.
The report found that 97 percent of those organizations have already been using the cloud or have plans to start, about half have a mobility strategy, but only about one-third have attempted to apply big data.
Karen Quintos, chief marketing officer at Dell, said that “we know that security, cloud, mobility and big data are the top IT priorities in all industries, but we need a deeper understanding of the practical realities of how companies are using these technologies today and what, if anything, is preventing them from unleashing their full potential.”
Michael Dell, Founder and CEO of Dell, said that “security is the number one obstacle to cloud, mobility and big data adoption. Most organisations are not prepared to deal with the basic security risks, let alone secure cloud, global workforces, and data moving in and out of the firewall.”
Laurie McCabe, partner at SMB Group, said that “despite mounting security risks and increased reliance on the Internet and technology to run their businesses, many small and midsize organisations are underprepared to deal with today’s security threats, let alone those of the future. These companies know that disruptive technologies like cloud, mobility and big data can drive innovation and create competitive advantage. But it’s often difficult for them to take a strategic approach and overcome security concerns in order to fully harness the potential.”
