Serverless Architecture: The Cloud is Killing Open Source
Serverless architecture. It’s the promise of products like Amazon AWS Lambda. The idea is that it’s not that there it doesn’t require servers and hardware, it’s a higher abstraction that thinks about computing resources as services rather than hardware, virtual machines or containers.
Amazon AWS explains it as follows: “Serverless architectures allow you to build and run applications and services without having to manage infrastructure. There’s a lot of undifferentiated heavy lifting to be building and running applications, such as installing software, managing servers, coordinating patch schedules, and scaling to meet demand. Your application still runs on servers, but all the server management is done for you… Serverless architectures can make it easier to build, manage, and scale applications in the cloud by eliminating much of the heavy lifting involved with server management.”
Matt Assay, open source evangelist, recently wrote: “Open source is dead. The cloud has killed it. Maybe “dead” is too strong… all signs point to the convenience of cloud supplanting the convenience of open source in the hearts of developers. Why? Because cloud is just that much more convenient, and new services like Amazon Web Services’ Lambda take that convenience to extreme—and welcome—levels.
