Social Media and Collaboration: Despite the Hype, Most Businesses Aren't Ready

By Dick Weisinger

Collaboration technologies have consistently been shown to save companies money on travel, office space and IT spending.  Collaboration helps staff members locate information more quickly and be better informed about both their companies and their job tasks.  Collaboration is also great at bringing focus to projects, managing schedule, assigning tasks, and bringing together people from many remote locations.

Despite the potential benefits though, most companies haven’t tried to use collaboration tools and are skeptical as to whether they will work for them.  Forrester Research tracks 12 identified potential benefits of the use of collaborative technologies.  But 64 percent say that they realize less than four of the potential benefits.   Those 12 benefits, listed in the order of most cited as being a benefit derived from Collaborative technologies, are as follows:

  • 62 percent – reduced travel costs
  • 58 percent – improved corporate communications
  • 44 percent – improved project management
  • 42 percent – faster decision-making
  • 37 percent – improved employee satisfaction
  • 33 percent – reduced IT costs
  • 27 percent – improved customer experience/satisfaction
  • 22 percent – improved partner relationships
  • 19 percent – reduced facilities cost
  • 19 percent – improved innovation
  • 9 percent – lower cycle time/time-to-market for new products

The Forrester report also listed the top three collaboration tools that organizations are piloting and adopting:

  • Team Workspaces
  • Desktop conferencing, instant messaging, web conferencing and real-time communication tools
  • Room-based video conferencing

TJ Keitt, author of the Forrester report, has some other insights into the results in his ZDNet Blog post.
