Storage: Data Growth Impacts Disaster Recovery Plans
In the struggle between IT and the growing amounts of data in the enterprise, it looks like data may be getting the upper hand. Data backups at some large corporations are becoming unwieldy.
A survey of 400 companies by Sepaton of companies with more than 1000 employees and that are also managing more than 50 TB of data are reporting problems in keeping up with data growth. 57 percent say that their data is growing faster than 20 percent annually.
And 42 percent say that data backups now take longer than 24 hours to run. And 46 percent say that they are unable to keep up with their backup strategy objectives. Many of these companies see disk-based backups and cloud computing as ways that could help them turn the situation around. Companies are also investigating the ability to shrink their data by using techniques like data deduplication.
But IT departments are being held back because of lack of money and processes that need to be redesigned to no longer be dependent on tape. In the mean time, high-priority items like disaster recovery preparedness are suffering.
