Storage: Tiering Data Storage using ILM
Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) can an important component of an organization’s storage strategy. ILM can help organizations meet their regulatory compliance requirements, shrink data storage redundancies, and to more cost-effectively store data.
The key to creating an ILM system is to be able to define and implement a process that can continuously evaluate priorities of the data that is being stored. Critical and frequently accessed content should be prioritized high so that data can be retrieved quickly, whereas the response time for lower priority data need not be as fast.
In an ILM system, data is moved from storage tier to storage tier as the priority criteria for the data changes. High-level storage media is media that is both optimized in hardware and software to be the fastest and most responsive storage. Mid-level storage is cheaper, although with slower data access speeeds, and Low-level storage is the cheapest storage available, but which will has the slowest response.

The principle of ILM is that as data is accessed less frequently, it generally loses its value to the organization, and eventually becomes a candidate to be shifted to less-expensive and less-powerful storage. Eventually, depending on retention and lifecycle rules, data may be migrated completely out of the system, either by purging it or by moving it to a tape or long-term archival system.
Richard Vining at IBM said that “if you can reduce the amount of data that you are actively storing and managing, you can reduce the amount of storage capacity you need and therefore the amount of power needed to run it. ILM is an important strategy to help achieve this goal. By setting policies on where to store data and for how long, you can automatically move a large percentage of overall data to secondary storage (including tape, which uses much less power than disk) and even delete it, eliminating power requirements altogether.”
