Technology: Open Source DBs win Adoptors
More and more enterprise data centers are giving Open Source databases a try. And many are liking what they see. While it’s not clear how Sun will ever be able to monetize back the $1 billion they spent to acquire Open Source MySQL, what is clear is that MySQL is on a roll with signing up new adoptors. Compared to brand-name commercial DB products like Oracle and IBM’s DB2, MySQL is a lean, mean and fast.
On a test migration project from Oracle to MySQL at NASA, MySQL clocked in at being overall 28 percent faster and had the advantage of requiring fewer system resources to run than Oracle. NASA also found that since their application wasn’t using proprietary Oracle extensions of the SQL language that the migration to MySQL took almost no time; they just needed to change the database driver and one line of code.
InformationWeek quotes Charles Garry, analyst of the Meta Group, as saying that “the future of the database market will be the standardization on MySQL”.
MySQL is judged to be simpler in design, easier to administer and maintain, and of higher performance. And you can’t beat the price. The difference in license fees between MySQL and Oracle can be more than an order of magnitude, and that can be compelling.
