The semiconductor industry is on the brink of a revolutionary shift, with custom software and silicon poised to define the next generation of chips. The landscape of computing is evolving rapidly, driven by the increasing demands of artificial intelligence (AI) and the need for more specialized, efficient hardware.

Major players in the tech industry are investing heavily in custom chip designs to meet the growing demands of AI and other data-intensive applications. According to a recent report by Capgemini, 58% of semiconductor organizations expect higher demand for neural processing units as generative AI adoption grows. This trend is pushing companies to develop more specialized hardware solutions.

Jiani Zhang, executive vice-president and chief software officer at Capgemini Engineering, emphasizes the importance of this shift: “With the growing complexity of AI, IoT and edge computing applications, the ability to integrate domain-specific software with hardware accelerators will define leadership”. This integration of software and hardware is becoming a crucial differentiator in the industry.

The move towards custom silicon is not limited to traditional chip manufacturers. Tech giants like Apple, Google, and Amazon are developing their own chips to optimize performance for their specific needs. For instance, Apple’s upcoming M4 chip, expected in May 2024, showcases this trend towards in-house chip design.

The implications of this shift are far-reaching. Custom chips can offer significant improvements in performance, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness for specific applications. Brett Bonthron, global high-tech industry leader at Capgemini, suggests that “The industry should see this as an opportunity to ramp-up production and adopt a ‘chip-to-industry’ approach that supports a full-stack, ‘software-first’ set of capabilities”.

As the industry continues to evolve, the fusion of custom software and silicon will likely redefine the boundaries of computing performance and efficiency, ushering in a new era of technological capabilities.
