ARMA International 2006 | selects SNIA instead of AIIM
Last week (Oct 22-25) ARMA, the Association for Records Managers and Administrators, held it’s annual meeting, ARMA International 2006 in San Antonio.
Just prior to the meeting there was some speculation of a merger of ARMA and AIIM organizations, but that didn’t happen. One problem at ARMA is that it hasn’t done a good job of embracing the management of electronic records, preferring to concentrate more on the handling of paper documents. A tie-up with AIIM would have been able to marry a strong IT capability with the policy and procedural strengths in RM of ARMA. But the cultures between the two organizations are different, ARMA being driven more from users / RM practitioners and AIIM being driven by vendor organizations.
Instead what was announced at ARMA International was a collaboration between ARMA and SNIA (the Storage Networking Industry Association).
During the week at ARMA International, they emphasized the need for collaboration between Records/Information Management (RIM), IT, legal and security professionals to address the complexities of managing records and information. The tie-up with SNIA should help fill the needed gap in the area of IT.
Some of the areas of collaboration between the two groups will include:
– Publishing joint papers, like their new paper, “Collaboration: The New Standard of Excellence“.
– Cross-Education and participation in each other’s conferences
– Cross-promotion of the 100 Year Archive Task Force, an initiative started by SNIA that is global and multi-agency based, defining best practrices for long term digital information retention.
With this announcement it looks like ARMA will be adding much needed IT expertise to their organization. The ARMA/SNIA alliance looks like it will be mutually beneficial for both organizations.
