IDC’s 3rd Platform: Predictions on the Direction of the Cloud, Big Data and Mobile in 2015
IDC recently released their predictions for the direction of IT in 2015. These include:
- Within the ICT segment, one third of the spending will be on what IDC calls ‘3rd platform‘. IDC refers to technologies like Cloud Computing, Big Data, and Mobile as belonging to the 3rd platform. PC’s and related infrastructure make up much of the 2nd platform.
- 3rd platform technology will also account for 100 percent of spending growth in 2015
- Within Telecommunications, wireless data will become the largest and fastest growing segment
- The use of mobile devices and apps will continue to grow in 2015, but not as quickly as we’ve seen in the past couple of years.
- Cloud Computing and the related cloud ecosystem will grow to be a $118 billion industry
- Big Data and related software, hardware and services will grow to $125 billion
- Spending on the Internet of Things (IoT) will continue to grow in 2015
- Data centers will change and transform to be better optimized and better support cloud computing and other 3rd platform technologies
- The 3rd platform is affecting all industries, not only technology
- China will begin to dominate global ICT markets in 2015, accounting for 43 percent of industry grown, one third of smart phone purchases and one third of online shoppers
Matt Eastwood, group vice-president and general manager, enterprise platforms at IDC, said that “the server market continues to be deeply impacted by the shift to the 3rd Platform and the affect of mobile, cloud, social and big data analytic technologies. IDC has seen increasing market influence from Greater China, hyperscale datacenters, ODMs and native Chinese OEMs, all of which grew sharply in the third quarter. We also saw the continuation of a cyclical enterprise refresh cycle, which IDC expects will continue well into 2015. This refresh will be further accelerated by Microsoft’s announcement that it is ending support for Windows Server 2003, coupled with Intel’s recent release of its Grantley Xeon EP.”
