Data Centers, AI, and Energy: The Triple Challenge for the IT Industry

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming data center infrastructure, energy consumption patterns, and regulatory landscapes. AI workloads demand unprecedented computational power, driving power densities in data centers from 8 kilowatts (kW) per rack to 17 kW in just two years, with projections reaching 30 kW by 2027. High-intensity tasks like training ChatGPT can exceed 80 kW per rack, while Nvidia’s GB200 chips may require up to 120 kW. This surge has increased average facility sizes from 30 megawatts (MW) a decade ago to 200 MW today. Consequently, AI systems are projected to consume nearly half of global data center electricity sometime this year — up from 20% in 2024 — reaching 23 gigawatts (GW), nearly double the Netherlands’ total energy use.

These energy demands are reshaping data center design and operations. Mechanical and electrical systems are being re-engineered to support high-density computing, with AI-driven solutions like dynamic cooling adjustments and workload shifting to greener energy sources gaining traction. Companies like Amazon Web Services advocate for nuclear energy to power AI infrastructure, while Goldman Sachs Research estimates $720 billion in grid investments will be needed by 2030 to support a projected 165% increase in data center power demand. Regulatory frameworks are evolving in parallel; the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security introduced export controls on advanced AI models and computing chips in 2025, with compliance deadlines extending to 2026.

Practical innovations are emerging to address these challenges. AI-optimized cooling systems use thermal imaging to adjust fan speeds and liquid cooling, while workload redistribution leverages geographic energy availability to reduce carbon footprints. The market for AI-ready data center construction is projected to grow from $24.59 billion in 2023 to $47.72 billion by 2029, with 81% allocated to critical infrastructure like power systems and liquid cooling. MIT researchers emphasize that “rethinking AI model training” and hardware efficiency will be crucial for sustainability. By 2027, AI could constitute 27% of global data center energy use, with cloud computing dropping to 50%. The industry is expected to triple investments in energy-efficient infrastructure by 2033, reaching $60 billion for enhancements like advanced cooling and high-speed networking.

This transformation will likely unfold incrementally, with major efficiency gains expected by 2027–2030. However, balancing AI’s exponential growth with environmental and regulatory constraints remains a defining challenge for the IT industry’s future.
