Digital Transformation: Security Cracks with New Innovation

By Dick Weisinger

Digital transformation has become a critical component of many business plans to differentiate themselves in the market, or increasingly more frequently, to just stay competitive.

Digital transformation brings with it benefits that include increased agility, data-based insights, improved customer satisfaction, and better collaboration and communication. But the flip side to this is that new technology may be less tested and hardened against cyber attacks. Even more likely is that new technology rollouts are often complex and easy to misconfigure and introduce unintentional vulnerabilities.

A study by Ponemon found that new technology and security problems often go hand in hand. The study found that 82 percent of organizations experienced a cyber breach as a result of changes made as part of a digital transformation program. 63 percent said that they had difficulty securing their cloud environments and more than half did not have a third-party risk-management program.

Stephen Osler, business development director at Nclose, said that “When many companies made the move to DX or DI, they often inadvertently increased their attack surface because many systems that were previously not on the internet are now being introduced to the network. Also, many had to make this move fast, so they’re still refining the ultimate goals they want to achieve with their DI or DX initiatives which means that they’re still working out how cybersecurity fits in and what its role has to be. The result is that they have gaps in their security infrastructure that they may not even be aware of.”
