IT Business: Frontline Line-of-Business Leaders Increasingly Control IT Spending
Cloud-based technology is increasingly eroding the control IT departments have over total technology spending. IDC forecasts that non-IT business units will spend more than $609 billion in 2017 and even be on par with or exceed IT department spending by 2020.
Line-of-business (LoB) buyers are expected to spend about six percent more this year, while IT department spending will increase at a rate slightly more than two percent. In particular, LoB spending on applications and application development is expected to increase 8.5 and 9.3 percent in 2017.
Naoko Iwamoto, IDC Senior Market Analyst, said that “companies’ adaptation of innovation accelerators, such as Internet of Things, cognitive/AI systems, and 3D printing, together with the four pillar technologies of the 3rd Platform, to both new product and service developments and day-to-day business operations has fundamentally increased LOB spending on IT. The innovation accelerators have put the line of business units in the frontline of the digital transformation and have forced them to work either alone with the ecosystem outside of the IT organisation as ‘shadow IT’ or in closer collaboration with the IT department than ever before.”
