SaaS and ECM: The Benefits of Managing Content in the Cloud

By Dick Weisinger

SaaS-based Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is predicted to grow at an average annual rate of 31 percent from 2013 to 2018, based on a report by TechNavio Research.  This compares to the total global ECM market which is expected to grow only 12 percent annually over the same period.  On-premise ECM still holds the bulk of the market share for the total ECM market space at 91 percent, but on-premise is expected to be slowly displaced by cloud-based solutions from now until 2018.

The number of vendors with solutions in the cloud ECM space is growing.  Cloud ECM vendors include Alfresco, Nuxeo, SpringCM, OpenText and EMC.

Some reasons why Cloud ECM is so attractive compared to On-Premise ECM solutions include:

  • Faster Startup
  • Reliability
  • Scalability
  • Lifecycle Management.  Systems are easier to support and improve

Faisal Ghaus, TechNavio Research Vice President, said that “SaaS-based ECM provides all the benefits of on-premise ECM systems in a trouble-free environment so that customers can focus on their core business activities while achieving a significant reduction in the total cost of ownership,” said in the report.
