Technology: Gartner’s Top Ten List

By Dick Weisinger

Gartner has released their list of top ten strategic technologies for 2019.  The annual list has been a tradition for Gartner.  It’s always interesting to do a comparison of what’s on the new list compared to what technologies were being tracked in previous years.

Looking way back to Gartner’s lists from 2005-2007, for example, we see that trends like ‘Linux’ and ‘Web 2.0 and Ajax’ ranked high.  It’s interesting that many of the items on the older lists have transitioned to being commodity or commonplace things that nowadays we take as given and not out of the ordinary.  The 2007 trend of ‘Social Software’ has had a profound influence on technology and society over the last decade.

In the more recent lists we see persistent references to AI and Machine Learning, Blockchain and Digital Twins.  It will be interesting to see the impact that these technologies have had ten years from now.

David Cearley, vice president and Gartner Fellow, said that “artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of automated things and augmented intelligence is being used together with IoT, edge computing and digital twins to deliver highly integrated smart spaces. This combinatorial effect of multiple trends coalescing to produce new opportunities and drive new disruption is a hallmark of the Gartner top 10 strategic technology trends for 2019.”
