Third Platform Nexus: IT Shifts Towards Platforms Based on New Converging Technologies
Technology is changing the way business is done and people work. Mobile computing, social media, cloud computing, big data,and the Internet of Things (IoT) are each having huge impacts on people’s lives, and collectively, these technologies are reforming much of the way that things are done. It’s the synergistic combination of “new technologies that are available early in the second decade of the twenty-first century“.
The combined forces of these new technologies is being recognized as a force in itself. Gartner calls it a “Nexus of Forces“. IDC is calling it “the 3rd platform for IT growth and innovation“.
Frank Gens, IDC Chief Analyst, said that “after a year in which a very high-profile tech CEO lost his job, a major IT player went private, numerous vendors endured cash cow stagnation, and billion-dollar 3rd Platform acquisitions bets were made, it’s clear: the 3rd Platform finally has the necessary attention from the IT industry’s leaders. In 2014, we’ll see every major player make big ‘put up or shut up’ investments to scale up cloud, mobile, and Big Data capabilities and fiercely battle for the hearts and minds of the developers that will create the solutions driving the next two decades of IT spending.”
IDC sees the bulk of growth in IT in 2014 coming from just two areas:
- Stagnant legacy infrastructure growth (.7 percent)
- 3rd-platform infrastructure growth (15 percent)
These two combined areas will push total IT growth to about 5 percent in 2014. But the future is in the 3rd-platform as IDC estimates that 89 percent of all growth spending will be on 3rd-platform technologies.
