Here are 10 top trends in the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) space:

  1. Consolidation.  IBM/Filenet, Oracle/Stellent, Open Text/Hummingbird/Red Dot, EMC/Documentum/Captiva.  I’ve written about the consolidation trends here and here and here.
  2. Compliance.  Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, FDA CPR-21, SEC 17a-4, and risk compliance are examples of government regulations that are acting as drivers.  Records Management (RM) is a huge component for achieving compliance.  Other components include high-volume archiving, email management, and search.
  3. ECM as Infrastructure.  Oracle and Microsoft seek to add basic ECM capabilities in middleware.  EMC touts embedded ECM.
  4. Scalability and Centralization.  Centralized RM/Compliance that spans the entire organization.  Enterprise versus departmental solutions.
  5. Commoditization.  Out-of-the-box basic DM and Imaging capabilities.
  6. Software as a Service (SaaS).
  7. Collaboration.  Ad hoc workflow.  Repository-based Wikis and Blogs.
  8. Content Personalization.  Targeted content.  Tagging.  Personal archive vaults.
  9. Open Source.  Vendors like Alfresco.
  10. Repositories Exposed as Web Services / SOA.
